Brixton Community Based Employment of 15-Year-Olds Policy

 

MISSION

Brixton Community Based inspires and helps young people find their unique voice through free participatory drama and performing arts activities, helping them to develop enduring and transferable skills that lead to increased life chances and long-term well-being. We work from the core belief that providing access to high quality arts activities is key to expanding young people’s horizons and creating lasting transformation.

Brixton Community Based is committed to providing a safe secure and nurturing environment, for all children and young people regardless of race, culture, religion, gender, sexuality, or disability. Children and young people have the right to be supported and protected from abuse of any kind, and all work carried out within Brixton Community Based adheres these principles.  

THE POLICY

This policy outlines the charity’s approach to employing 15-year-olds, ensuring compliance with UK employment laws and safeguarding principles.

The charity will adhere to all relevant UK employment laws, including:

  • Working Hours Restrictions:

    • Term Time: Maximum 12 hours per week, including 2 hours on school days and Sundays, and 5 hours on Saturdays.

    • School Holidays: Maximum 35 hours per week, including 8 hours on weekdays and Saturdays, and 2 hours on Sundays.

  • Prohibited Work: Young workers will not be employed in hazardous environments or roles that may negatively impact their health, education, or well-being.

  • Rest Breaks: Employees under 16 must receive a 30-minute break if working more than 4.5 hours, 12 hours’ rest between shifts, and 48 hours’ rest per week.

Employment Conditions

  • Permitted Roles: The charity will only employ 15-year-olds in roles suitable for their age, such as administrative support, event and workshop assistance, or supervised community engagement.

  • Local Authority Approval: The charity will obtain an employment permit from Lambeth Council

  • Safeguarding Measures: All young employees will receive appropriate supervision and safeguarding training in line with our Child Protection and Safeguarding policies.

Pay and Benefits

  • The charity will ensure fair compensation in line with minimum wage regulations for young workers.

  • Young employees will have access to development opportunities, including mentorship and training.

Health & Safety

  • The charity will conduct risk assessments for all roles involving young workers.

  • Adequate protective measures will be in place to ensure their safety in the workplace.

This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure compliance with evolving legal requirements and best practices.
